The Tree of Life (2011)
The story centers around a family with three boys in the 1950s. The eldest son witnesses the loss of innocence.
Written and directed by the impressive Terrence Malick.
Absolutely beautiful! Sit back and enjoy the show. As advertised… A visual feast. Whispers and breath of life as we know it. Grand, and very close to home.
Brilliant acting by stern father Brad Pitt, the depressed and hopeful Sean Penn and the gentle Jessica Chastain. The kids were spectacular.
This is what i would call a “relaxing” film. Beautiful and slow, like meditation.
I had the pleasure of watching this with my brother. Who infuriatingly dubbed it as a “Pretentious” film. I laughed out loud and then realized “i could screencap every frame of this flick add some hipster text with some meaningful message about life or love”. By god he’s right!
Without a doubt this is a good movie. BUT for some this may be tiresome and flat out boring. Don’t expect much, watch it on a lazy relaxing Sunday afternoon.
TRIVIA: Jack O’Brien’s initials are J-O-B. In the Bible, Job was a man tested by God after Satan wagers Job only serves God because of His protection. After losing his wealth, family and health, Job would rather curse himself than God. A passage from the Book of Job - “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation… while the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?” - is used to open The Tree of Life.
Heavy, sluggish and captivating. It’s got so much juice. For the patient and wise.
